April 1, 1999 During a chat with fans at the Boom Theory web site, Matt Cameron spills the beans on his future with Pearl Jam. Says Matt on the vacancy in the Pearl Jam drum slot: "I am filling in permanently."

April 6, 1999 The debut album New Dawning Time by Gardener is released on Sub Pop Records. Gardener features Aaron Stauffer of Seaweed and Van Conner of Screaming Trees.

Matt Lukin, Mudhoney bassist ince the band's formation in 1988, decides to leave the band, only days after Mudhoney leaves Reprise Records.

July 1999
Mark Arm, Steve Turner, Tom Price, Tim Kerr, and Martin Bland enter the studio to begin recording the second Monkeywrench album.

October 26, 1999 Alice in Chains release their long awaited box set Music Bank on Columbia Records.

June 23, 2000 The Experience Music Project opens. Bands playing at the premier include Built to Spill and Screaming Trees.

Screaming Trees announced that the EMP shows were the last that the band would play. Mark Lanegan: "The other guys have families and other projects to work on. And I'm working on my fifth solo record."

July 18, 2000 Sub Pop Records re-issue vinyl editions of classic Sub Pop albums Nirvana's Bleach, Soundgarden's Screaming Life, Mudhoney's Superfuzz Bigmuff, and Dwarves' Blood, Guts, And Pussy.

June 2001 Sunny Day Real Estate break up for the second and final time.

March 16, 2002 The Fastbacks, the longest running northwest band of the latter 20th century, play the Noisepop Festival, their final show.

April 5, 2002 Beat Happening releases their monster 6 cd box set on K Records.

April 19, 2002 Layne Staley, singer of the wildly popular and influential supergroup Alice in Chains, is found dead in his Seattle apartment. He was 34.
